Village Of Marvin Does Not Anticipate Tax Increase

A message from the Marvin Village Council:
The Marvin Village Council does not anticipate a tax increase for the coming year. The proposed 2010-2011 budget calls for the town’s tax rate to remain at 5 cents per $100 valuation.
The Council has been analyzing all expenditures and doing costs analysis from surrounding towns. They are looking to make significant reductions in the top expense categories to assure the Village is maximizing all taxpayer dollars. They have stated numerous times they are committed to a fiscally responsible budget that strives to accrue assets for the residents of Marvin. One of their major goals is to acquire park land for the enjoyment and use of all Village residents. The Council will also strive to promote safety within Marvin by working with Union County Sheriff’s Office and NC Department of Transportation.
A public hearing will be held at 7:00 p.m. June 8th during the regular Village Council meeting which will be held at Bank’s Fellowship Hall. The new budget will take effect on July 1st.

Waxhaw, NC – Battle of Wilson’s Store-145th Anniversary. This Civil War Reenactment was amazing! Guns, cannons, women, oh my! It was a hot day on the fields of the Museum of the Waxhaws on Saturday May 15, but parents with their kids were out watching and learning about the battle that went on years past on our land. The Director, Scott Farb, sure put on a fun show in this living history interpretation. Check out the photos and video clip of the battle. See if you can spot how one of the yanks gets his prisoner who decides to run away…what happens next?
Village Of Marvin Hosting It’s First Annual Bicycle Rodeo On May 22 At Marvin Elementary

Marvin, NC – The Village of Marvin has scheduled the first annual Bicycle Rodeo on Saturday, May 22 at Marvin Elementary School. The annual ‘Shred Day’ will be held in conjunction with this event from 10 a.m.-noon.
The Bike Rodeo will include numerous free events to help demonstrate and encourage bicycle safety. Riders of all ages and experience levels are invited to participate. The day begins at 8 a.m. with an off-site bicycle ride from Marvin Elementary School to downtown Waxhaw and back. This ride will have a police escort and is for older children and adults. The total ride is 15.1 miles. There will be a sag-wagon following the group to help with any mechanical problems. Experienced riders may decide to continue on from Waxhaw for a longer ride before returning.
The fun continues at 9:30 a.m. at Marvin Elementary School. There will be a bicycle ride for children along the newly opened Marvin Loop with an escort by Union County Sheriff’s deputies with their “gator” vehicle. Younger children will be able to participate by riding their bikes, trykes and big wheels through an obstacle course around the bus lot. All riders must have a signed waiver before participation.
There will be vendors from area bike and sports stores, medical professionals and food vendors. There will be give-aways, raffles, bicycle safety information and bicycle safety check ups. Donations of new and gently used bicycles will be accepted for the enjoyment of needy Union County families. Volunteers are still needed for this event. Shred Day will be held in conjunction with the Bike Rodeo from 10 a.m. until noon at Marvin Elementary School. This free event is open to the public. Now that tax season is over, it’s time to clean out those filing cabinets and closets and bring your paper materials to be professionally shredded. No need to remove paper clips or staples. Just box up your files and let the professionals from Automated Shredding Inc. do the work for you. Call the Village Hall at 704-843-1680 for additional information.

There were raffles for over $600 each for baskets donated by local businesses including MAC’s IPAD, Basket of CASH, Camera,Frames, & Family Photography Session, Beach Vacation, and more. A Wii van thrilled kids playing guitar, tennis and laser gun games!

Marvin, NC – You don’t have to be a horse owner to be fascinated by horses, and the Marvin Area Recreational Equine Show (MARES) is an event for everyone who loves these amazing creatures.
MARES is scheduled for Saturday, May 1 from 10am – 3pm at 9705 Joe Kerr Road. The event will feature distinctive, family friendly horse demonstrations in our arena, “play until you win” games, crafts for kids, face painting, hay rides, pony rides, a petting zoo, food and more.
Purchase your tickets by Monday, 4/26 and pay just $5 a ticket. Ticket price includes: admission to event and demonstrations, hay ride, crafts/games/prizes for kids, petting zoo, face painting and lots of fun. Pony rides and food will be available for an additional charge.
Tickets purchased after 4/26 will be $6. Tickets are limited, so don’t miss out. In preparation for the Marvin Area Recreational Equine Show, which is next Saturday, May 1 from 10am – 3pm, please note the following volunteer opportunities. Everyone must turn in a signed waiver prior to volunteering on the event site. Workday and Event waivers for adults and minors are attached.
There will be a MARES workday this Sunday, April 25 from 12:30-5:30 at 9705 Joe Kerr Road. Teenage and adult volunteers are needed for assorted duties including light construction. Please bring work gloves and wear appropriate clothing.
Teenage and adult volunteers are still needed for tasks leading up to and on the day of the MARES event. Some jobs can even be completed at home.

Manasvi Koul Of Waxhaw Creating Awareness And Recruiting For Bone Marrow Donors. Her Personal Story

Waxhaw, NC – Waxhaw resident, Manasvi Koul appeared on Fox News Rising on April 9th to promote her cause of creating awareness and recruiting Bone Marrow Donors. She is a cancer survivor and needed a transplant, but there was no match for her in World Bone Marrow Registry.
She somehow survived and can never receive a transplant, even if there is a match in future. She continues to fight for those who need Bone Marrow and Cord Blood matches and are waiting. Bone Marrow or Cord Blood transplant is usually the last resort for a patient.
Manasvi has experienced that and does not want others to be in the same situation. She has not given up, instead she uses her personal experience to help others in need and has made committed to community, especially those who are poorly represented on the Bone Marrow Registry.

Waxhaw, NC – The 5th Annual Waxhaw Town and Country Run, a 5K, Fitness Walk, and ½ Mile Fun-Run, will take place Friday April 30. Check in is at 5:30 p.m. The Fitness Walk and Fun Run will be at 6:40 p.m. The 5K is at 7 p.m.
It will start on E. North Main in downtown Waxhaw, near the old fire station. The race is hosted by the Waxhaw-Weddington Sunrise Rotary Club and benefits the Union County Crisis Assistance Ministries and other charities. The lead sponsor is Carolinas Medical Center-Union.

Marvin Ridge H.S. DECA Students Compete At 2010 Career Development Conference

Nineteen Marvin Ridge High School DECA students were finalists in their area of competition at the 2010 Career Development Conference which was held March 3rd to March 6th. Students were involved in a variety of activities that included: performing functions and skills relating to areas of service such as automotive or business marketing, amateur or professional sports, entertainment, or cultural events, retail merchandising, and accounting. They had opportunities to develop seasonal sales promos for existing and new businesses, prepare for advertising campaigns which would be presented to prospective clients, and conduct community service projects.

Sylvan Learning Center Of Waxhaw Launches NEA Read Across America At New Town & Kensington Elementary School

Waxhaw, NC - Sylvan Learning Center of Waxhaw launched a “Read-In” at Kensington Elementary and New Town Elementary to encourage students and parents to read, as part of NEA’s Read Across America. In addition to the event, Sylvan of Waxhaw also hosted a poetry contest for both schools in celebration of Dr. Seuss’s 105th birthday. All students were invited to participate in writing a short poem entitled “Why I Love to Read” in the writing style of Dr. Seuss. One winner from each school received the grand prize of 10 free passes to Monkey Joe’s. Both students had their poems copied to a book donated by Sylvan of Waxhaw.
Rebecca Hood was the grand prize recipient from Ms. Niesser’s 5th grade class at New Town Elementary. Her creative poem reads:
I love to read. It’s fun, you’ll see.
The books are labeled A to Z.
There’s funny ones about a bee.
And how to sit and have some tea.
Those of courage who were set free,
These stories and more fill me with glee.
It’s time to stop, turn off the Wii.
So let’s go read just you and me.
Olivia Donigian was the grand prize recipient from Ms. Tucker’s 1st grade class at Kensington Elementary. Her creative poem reads:
I love to read each and every day.
I do it before I go and play.
It doesn’t matter if it rains,
Because when I read it feeds my brain.
Red books, Yellow books, Green books are go!
I like to take books to school to show.
Every student from both Kensington Elementary and New Town Elementary received a pencil and a Dr. Seuss “I Love to Read” sticker.

By pledging to pick up a book, children are taking the first step toward a lifelong love of reading, success and learning. This simple pledge makes their commitment to reading real, and increases the likelihood that the child will read a book.”

Waxhaw Losest One Of It’s Finest, Richard Belk

Waxhaw, NC – Waxhaw Police Officer, Richard Belk, passed away in his sleep Tuesday night. He was 38 years old. Officer Belk had been with the Waxhaw PD for about five years. He was a very loved and admired police officer. Waxhaw was very lucky to have Officer Belk for the short time we did.
In October 2009, Officer Belk was injured during a training exercise. He was diagnosed with compartmental syndrome. Officer Belk had numerous surgeries to repair the damage in his leg from this injury. He always kept his spirits high and kept a positive attitude. Officer Belk will be missed by all of Waxhaw. Marvin Ridge H.S. Football Team Helps Habitat For Humanity

Coach Scott Chadwick and the Marvin Ridge High School Football team were looking for a way they could become more involved in the community. Tanner Hillis, a team member, suggested they look at working with Habitat for Humanity.
After making some calls, Saturday Feb 6th, worked out to be the day for them to work on their first house. These boys are great athletes, but for a couple of them it was their first experience working as carpenters with a framing hammer.
On Saturday they were all at the Habitat House at 7:30 am in 35° weather. They were excited to be able to meet the owner of the new house; and left ready to plan work on another house in the spring.
Waxhaw Homes Evacuated When Explosive Looking Device Found During Eviction

Waxhaw, NC – Union County Sheriff Deputy Sgt. Pauline Lucore and Deputy Brandon Wicker discovered what appeared to be an explosive device while serving eviction papers due to foreclosure this morning at 2017 Dunsmore Ln. The owners of record at the time of foreclosure were Evangelina Rodriguez & Caroline Evangelina Latchison.
The house was vacant. Upon finding the device in an upstairs room, Sgt. Lucore evacuated the home and called Waxhaw Police. The ATF and the Charlotte Mecklenburg Bomb Squad were called in to investigate. Over 30 homes in the immediate area were evacuated.
A Char/Meck Bomb Squad technician suited up and entered the home. Once entering the home, the Bomb Squad technician determined the device was made of children’s play doh and wires, designed to look like an explosive device. Play Doh is a child’s clay like moldable toy that it is primarily a mixture of water, salt and flour.
