Union County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Ed Davis Honored By Rotary

Union County, NC – Dr. Ed Davis, superintendent of Union County Public Schools, has been chosen by the Rotary Club of Monroe to receive the “Service Above Self” award. Davis, the 2009-2010 North Carolina Southwest Regional Superintendent of the Year, was recognized during the July 27, 2010 Rotary Club of Monroe meeting in recognition of “his outstanding dedication and service.”

The Rotary’s motto is “service above self,” and the award is given annually to honor one individual who exemplifies that motto.

“He’s always stepped up to the plate at Rotary when we’ve asked him to serve on anything. He served on the Scholarship Committee for several years, he served on our Literacy Council and he is serving this year on the International World View Board with our district.”
- Jack Hargett, Outgoing Rotary President

Hargett said Davis’ work with the United Way (he will serve as this year’s United Way chairman) and the work he does with the school system are also part of the reasons he was selected. “He’s just a great guy, and never hesitates to step up when needed. We need more people like him.”

“I am humbled, of course,” Davis said. “I wish I had more time to give to Rotary. They do a lot of community service. The list is endless. It’s a service organization and a good group of people. Because of my role as superintendent, I don’t get to participate to the extent that I would like to, but I do participate when I can and do what I can. I feel honored to belong to an organization that makes service to others a core value of that organization.”

Davis said service to others is an essential part of our society. “When we’re put into this world, it’s not just about us,” he said. “If everyone adopts the attitude to try to do something to help their fellow man, the world would be a better place. Some people can do a lot and some can do only a little bit, but we can all do something. There are a lot of takers in our world today. We need more givers.”
