December 5, 2008, Monroe, NC – The Union County, NC Christmas Bureau is in dire need of gifts and money or it won’t be able to assist many needy children and families this year. And, time is running out. The Christmas Bureau’s family sponsorships are down more than 300 families from last year. During 2007, the Christmas Bureau matched 547 families with a sponsor, but this year, they have only had 240 families sponsored.
Gift Trees are also down about 400 children from last year’s numbers, and December 15 is the date these gifts are needed at the Christmas Bureau. Gifts for those sponsoring families must be back by that day also. The Monroe, NC Christmas Bureau needs about 3,500 stockings for the children on the Bureau’s list this year, and so far they have only received about 50. “We have the empty stockings and the volunteers to make them, now we just need things to put in the stockings,” said Gloria Haney, volunteer services coordinator for Union County Department of Social Services. “Candy, toothbrushes, toothpaste, socks, small $1 toys, nail polish, brushes, etc. are good items for stockings. By spending just $5, you can make a really good stocking for a boy or a girl.”
Groups or individuals may sponsor families, gift trees or fill stockings for children. Monetary donations may also be made in person or mailed to the Christmas Bureau at 1416 Skyway Drive, Monroe, NC 28110. All donations are tax deductible.
