Stephen Lance Helms Charged With 2nd Degree Homicide In Hit And Run Bicycle Death


Union County, NC – Around 11:30 p.m. last night, officers responded to an accident on Rocky River Road near Myers Road. When officers arrived, they found Roy Dean Mittelsteadt, 46, of Harrington Quick Road, Monroe, dead. Mr. Mittelsteadt, who was riding his bicycle on his way home from work, was struck by a hit and run driver.

Officers notified the surrounding agencies to be on the lookout for any vehicle that had substantial front end damage. Around 3:30 a.m., Wingate Police officers stopped a white Honda Element that had massive front end damage. Wingate Police placed the driver under arrest for DWI and contacted the Monroe Police Department.

Stephen Lance Helms, 31 of Charlotte, NC, was charged with second degree homicide. He is in the Union County Jail and bond is pending. The investigation is ongoing and further charges are pending against Mr. Helms.
