Radar Speed Signs Being Installed On Myers Rd

radar-speed-signThe City of Monroe has received multiple requests over the years to address speeding along Myers Road. The roadway does not qualify for the installation of traffic calming devices such as speed cushions since Myers Road is classified as a collector type street and serves as the primary emergency route to several residential neighborhoods located in the area.

The Monroe Police Department has often set up their speed trailer in an effort to slow traffic in response to citizen’s concerns. The City of Monroe has now acquired two solar powered radar speed signs in an effort to “traffic calm” Myers Road. Similar type signs have been previously used on U.S. 601 South by the North Carolina Department of Transportation in an effort to reduce vehicle speeds.

The radar signs will be installed on Myers Road between Dec. 1 and Dec.15 to provide a longer term response to the police speed trailer. The signs will display the speed of approaching vehicles using highly visible LEDs to advise motorists of their speed. The sign will flash after the speed limit is exceeded by 10 mph or more to prevent motorists from speeding just to see how fast they can make the sign read.

The City of Monroe, NC Engineering Department will be monitoring the effectiveness of the signs over the next year as a traffic calming tool.

Questions regarding the radar signs can be directed to Sarah McAllister at (704) 282-4532.
