Piedmont Middle Visual Arts Dept. Does More Than Just Draw On Paper, They Draw Ideas

Union County, NC – Piedmont Middle School’s Visual Arts Dept. is made up of 300 students across three grade levels – 6th, 7th, and 8th.

Students do more than draw on paper, they learn to succeed by drawing on their ideas… to be critical creative thinkers.

Along with exploring ways of making art, students understand that all things connect.

Their website features how students use math to create portraits, environmental science to create a sculpture garden, social studies to create gondola races in Venice, and global economics to understand the Italian fashion industry

They use technology to create a virtual classroom.

Their website is a place where they exhibit their work, explain their projects, and celebrate their experiences.

The Visual Arts website is a constant work in process, updating and changing frequently.

7th grade art students learned the process of portrait making through the use of grids.

Students created a 1/2″scaled grid on their photo and a 1″ scaled grid on their art surface.

Each student hand-generated their portraits in pencil using only their eye sight and judgement to enlarge each grid block.

Students were allowed to select their photo pose and whether or not to add color to their finished pencil drawing.
