Union County, NC – Recently, Angelique Newton, Exceptional Needs Teacher at East Union Middle School started the SADD but TRU club (Students Against Destructive Decisions but Tobacco Reality Unfiltered) at school. The club promotes the choice to be alcohol and tobacco free.

The club has over 50 active members. The club members help other students make positive decisions about challenges in their everyday lives. The East Union Middle School club meets twice a month.

At their last meeting they decided to select a community service project as their November activity. Newton, club advisor, learned about a study that found hundreds of children across the city left school on Friday and ate little or nothing until they returned on Monday.

The club started collecting can food on November 1st. After only one week of collecting, the club has collected over 1400 items.

The items will be divided among twenty needy families in the Marshville area. The club plans to make this an annual project. The club contributes its success to the faculty and students of East Union Middle School for their gracious donations.
