City Of Monroe Limitations For Election signs

Monroe, NC

As the municipal election draws near the City of Monroe would like to share information regarding where election signs cannot be located within the city limits. These guidelines apply not only to candidates placing the signs, but also supporters.

The following is a list of prohibited locations for the placement of election signs:

  • Sight Distance Triangles – the area of visibility required on a corner to allow for the safe operation of vehicles, trains, pedestrians, and cyclists in the proximity of intersecting streets, rail lines, sidewalks, and bicycle paths.
  • Utility Poles
  • Landscaped Islands
  • Island on Circle Drive at the intersection of Franklin Street.
  • Island at intersection of Franklin Street and Jefferson Street.
  • Island on Griffith Road at the intersection of Lancaster Avenue.
  • Island at the intersection of Charlotte Avenue, Houston Street, and Lancaster Avenue.
  • Islands and other areas located on Corporate Center Drive at the intersection of Airport Road.
  • Island on Paul Helms Drive.

On-off ramps:

  • Intersection of U.S. 601 and U.S. 74.
  • Intersection of Concord Highway and U.S. 74.

Landscaped areas:

  • Around the City Welcome on U.S. 74 on the east and west sides of the city.
  • “Five Points” at the intersections of Windsor and Franklin Street and Jefferson and Franklin Streets.
  • Charlotte Avenue between Crowell Street and Jefferson Street.
  • City owned parking lots.
  • Signs are prohibited from being located within the landscaped areas due to the irrigation systems and maintenance required for landscaped areas. The City does not plan to dispose of election signs placed in prohibited areas, but city employees will simply remove them from any restricted areas and place them on the ground.

If someone finds that an election sign has been removed and placed on the ground, this means that it has been located within a restricted area. Individuals may remove and relocate the sign to an approved location.
