City Of Monroe Kicks Off National Drinking Water Week

Monroe, NC. National Drinking Water Week

The City of Monroe Water Resources Department kicked off National Drinking Water Week with an educational booth and water purification demonstrations at Belk Tonawanda Park Friday and Saturday. Drinking Water Week is an opportunity for people across the United States to celebrate what a precious resource drinking water is and to renew a commitment to keep it safe. Americans enjoy some of the highest quality drinking water in the world.

“Tap water is lean, clean and green,”

said city of Monroe Water Resource Director Russell Colbath. “It’s lean in that it’s a zero-calorie choice to keep us healthy and hydrated. It’s clean because dedicated water professionals treat our drinking water and constantly monitor it, ensuring that lives up to high water quality standards. And our tap water is ‘green’ in that it encourages the protection of our watersheds and does not require a bottle.”

Colbath went on to say tap water is one of the true values left in today’s economy, where you can fill a 20 ounce sports bottle more than 4000 times, form your Monroe tap, for just $1. Under the City’s current fee schedule, you can get 1000 gallons of water for just $1.90.

Drinking Water Week is sponsored by the American Water Works Association (AWWA). Established in 1881, AWWA is the oldest and largest nonprofit, scientific and educational organization dedicated to safe water in North America. AWWA has more than 60,000 members worldwide and its 4,500 utility members serve 80 percent of the U.S. population.

This year’s water week theme is “Only Tap Water Delivers”. Public water supply systems deliver the following important benefits to Monroe:

Protect public health – More than 3 million people in the world die each year from preventable water borne diseases while Americans can drink from any public tap with virtual certainty of quality and safety. Monroe’s water supply must meet rigorous protective health standards.

Fire protection – Monroe’s water supply is ever ready to support local fire department any time they need water for fire fighting.

Supports the economy – Without a well operated and maintained water supply system, communities do not thrive or prosper. Monroe has been vigilant in maintaining water supply for important economic development projects.

Quality of life – From health needs to recreation, when water service is interrupted, we’re all reminded of the extraordinary value of water resources and service.
