Car Fire Causes Traffic Delays On Hwy 74 Near Walkup Avenue


Monroe, NC - The Monroe Fire Department responded to a report of a vehicle fire on W. Roosevelt Boulevard at the intersection of Walkup Avenue at 12:58 this afternoon. First arriving units found the vehicle heavily involved in fire, mostly in the engine compartment. The driver of the vehicle escaped unharmed.

Witnesses stated that they heard a loud pop and noticed fire and smoke coming from the engine compartment. Several lanes of Roosevelt Boulevard also known as Highway 74 were closed during the fire until crews were able to extinguish the fire. One lane of Eastbound 74, along with the turn lane to Walkup Avenue remained closed during the investigation of the incident. The road was fully reopened by 1:45 PM.

Investigators determined the fire was accidental and was caused by an unknown malfunction in the engine compartment.
