2 Killed In Matthews Accident Involving Motorcycle And S.U.V.

Matthews, NC – Saturday February 19, 2011, at approximately 3:20 PM the Matthews Police Department responded to a motor vehicle crash involving a Honda SUV and a motorcycle.

The SUV was making a left turn from Hwy 74 East to go into the parking lot of Northern Tool located at 12527 E. Independence Blvd. when it was struck by a motorcycle traveling west bound at a high rate of speed.

The force of the impact caused the SUV to overturn and trap the occupants. Union County EMS, Mecklenburg County MEDIC, as well as members of the Stallings and Matthews fire departments were able to extract the occupants of the Honda SUV so they could be transported to Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte.

The driver of the SUV, identified as 46 year old Gloria Escobar of Charlotte, was listed in serious condition at the scene. Her husband, 37 year old Alfredo Morales also of Charlotte, was listed as being in critical condition.

A Yamaha R6, a relatively lightweight, extremely fast sport bike with many non-metallic, composite parts, carrying two young adults struck a Honda Pilot SUV broadside, with such force that it nearly severed the SUV in half and flipped it completely upside down.

Injuries sustained by the driver and passenger of the motorcycle were immediately fatal. The driver of the motorcycle has been identified as 37 year old Craig Anderson of Monroe NC. The passenger has been identified as 24 year old Tiffany Johnson of Matthews.

The crash is under investigation by the Matthews Police Department and there has not been any criminal charges filed.
